Soperton...The Ongoing Evolution Continued

Another major employer in Treutlen County is the school system. When Treutlen County was created in 1917, over 20 schools existed within the new boundaries. Slowly over the next 30 years, the white schools would consolidate into one Soperton school system. In the fall of 1955, the present buildings were erected and all white and black schools consolidated respectively. Not until 1970 would the two separate school systems make a smooth transition into an integrated system. In 1993, the Treutlen County schools underwent a major renovation and construction project. Today, Treutlen boasts state-of-the-art facilities and technological infrastructure. For example, in the fall of 2001, the middle school begins participating in a three-year pilot program that provides each teacher and student with a laptop computer to use at school and home.

The story of Treutlen County is a success story still unfolding. City officials have obtained grants to beautify the downtown area by creating a park in the center of town in front of Soperton City Hall, or what used to be the old train depot. The Soperton High School's old football field has been turned into an attractive park and walking track for citizens to enjoy. The Soperton of yesterday is transformed, yet still very present, and so is that pioneer spirit that created it, promising a bright future. As James Lawton wrote, "Is there any wonder that our chests expand a little when we in this community say:" "This is where I live."
