Soperton...The
Ongoing Evolution
In the 1920's the county's
population was around 8,000, but the Depression took
its toll on the farming community. The county population
in 1950 was around 6,500. Census information from
1970 shows that the population had declined to around
5,600. However, in the years since, the population
has steadily inclined, especially in last 10 years
as people have moved in to take advantage of the lower
cost of living.
Certainly, the Treutlen
County Development Authority is seeking industry for
Treutlen County, and as a means to that end, a $500,000
branch of Swainsboro Technical Institute is being
built in the Treutlen County Industrial Park. Industries
will be able to tailor-train potential employees.
Currently, the county's biggest employers are General
Fabric and Fibers; Piglet, Inc.; the State Correctional
Institution; and the Treutlen County Nursing Home.
