Soperton...The Ongoing Evolution

In the 1920's the county's population was around 8,000, but the Depression took its toll on the farming community. The county population in 1950 was around 6,500. Census information from 1970 shows that the population had declined to around 5,600. However, in the years since, the population has steadily inclined, especially in last 10 years as people have moved in to take advantage of the lower cost of living.

Certainly, the Treutlen County Development Authority is seeking industry for Treutlen County, and as a means to that end, a $500,000 branch of Swainsboro Technical Institute is being built in the Treutlen County Industrial Park. Industries will be able to tailor-train potential employees. Currently, the county's biggest employers are General Fabric and Fibers; Piglet, Inc.; the State Correctional Institution; and the Treutlen County Nursing Home.
