Soperton/Treutlen...A
New County Continued
The creation of Treutlen
County had a positive effect on the city of Soperton,
which was granted a new city charter in 1920, extending
the city limits. The population had grown to 1033.
On May 5, 1918, the Atlanta Constitution ran a full-page
feature on Soperton, examining a young community during
World War I. The article described it as having a
bustling downtown, especially on Saturday. The existence
of three large cotton warehouses suggests that cotton
was a major economic force. The biggest employer at
that time was Durden Lumber and Timber Company, with
the Soperton mill employing 70 people.
