Soperton...The
History Of Treutlen County
The late James Lawton, publisher and
editor of The Soperton News from 1940 to 1953, once
wrote a column extolling the virtues of Treutlen County:
"When someone speaks of his home and says,"
'This is where I live,' he is more probably expressing
the pride of knowing that his house stands where only
bare earth stood before, that is a monument to his
thrift, to his independence and to all the other things
that give him self-respect in his community."
This "bare earth" that Lawton spoke of is
the setting for the story of how this land came to
be called Treutlen County.
